It’s been a busy month for me. I was up bright and early last Saturday following the Oxford & Cambridge Club’s ball the previous night. After dragging ourselves out of bed, Holly and I hopped back on the underground before driving over to Oxford to meet Out of the Blue.
I’d been looking forward to this shoot for quite a while. For those of you who don’t know, Out of the Blue are an amazing a cappella group made up entirely of Oxford students and specialising in some rather unusual renditions. If you haven’t heard them, stop reading this right now and go check them out or youtube their Britain’s Got Talent semi-final performance.
Unfortunately as is often the way on this sort of thing, we ended up getting a little pushed for time and losing one of our locations. Nevertheless we made the most of what we had and started in Exeter College chapel before heading down to Holly’s old college, Oriel, for this one on the steps.
I had a great time and it was really awesome to hear the guys put on some impromptu little jam sessions while I set up all the lights. Beats my normal model shoots!
More soon,
Alex
Edit: I also shot some pretty cool individual shots…

A couple of photos from todays workshop, my first in Bristol. Was an amazing day with lots of fun and giggles. I’m going to do a bit more of a write up soon with plenty of behind the scenes photos, for now though I think I need my bed!

More adventures (and workshops) soon.
Alex
[DISCLAIMER] Please don’t try this at home! This photo was shot with professional drivers on a closed road and if you attempt to recreate it it could result in serious injury or death. I’m not joking: unless you really know what you’re doing, don’t try this at home.
So in this edition of the story behind the photo I’m going to go through how on earth we came up with and shot the photos of the Minis below. It’s a bit of a crazy one and goes to show that not all wedding photos have to be boring!

Wow it’s been a long time since I last blogged and good lord has a lot happened! To summarise:
- Went to Mongolia
- Met some Monks
- Got engaged
- Went horse riding
- Tamed my horse
- Woke up with a tick sucking blood out of my stomach
- Got a jeep
- Drove for days with no roads
- Trashed my cameras
- Found some cool people
- Got delayed for 8 hours in Moscow due to Aeroflot
- Holly got Siberian Tick Typhus
- Spent a week in and out of hospital
- Got cameras fixed
- Shot an amazing wedding.
Yep I think that just about sums it up. Needless to say I’m a touch behind with photos but here’s one from Mongolia.

Found this little boy out to the west living in a Ger with his parents. Really great family, very friendly. Found out talking to them though that they lost 30% of their animals over the winter, really heartbreaking to hear and see all the bodies.
More adventures soon though along with a bigger write up of the trip.

Forty Models, Photographers and makeup artists, one amazing site, one amazing day.
Packing for Mongolia now. More adventures soon!

Well folks it took a lot of organising but we made it. On sunday the big photo shootout finally happened at a derelict RAF base just north of Cambridge.
Really great day, we had some amazing models, photographers and makeup artists on hand. Really can’t wait to see what everybody made of it. Unfortunately I spent most of my day sorting things out and not shooting (damn I missed out on some AMAZING models
) but here’s a couple of mine from the lighting seminar I gave.

Hope you all enjoyed it and add us to your RSS reader if you want to know when and where the next shoot will be!
More adventures soon,
Alex
Having not learned my lesson with the horses I decided to up my game and this time try a photograph including not one but two dogs. The vision for this one was a very highly stylised almost Chanel like photo of Carys with her two dogs. I’ve put the photo up on the blog before but here it is again along with a couple of others we snagged to jog your memory.

Well if you want to know some of the secret sauce which went into this photo hit the read more link…

Never work with children or animals. At what point did I forget that golden rule?? Well anyway I know I promised to do a little techie post on some of my more recent photos so here goes nothing.
So let’s start with the horse shot. The back story to this is that it was inspired by a mixture of Lord of the Rings and Drew Gardner. What I wanted to do was put Carys in the middle of a sunny forest with beams of light shining through the trees and her riding through them. Here’s the shot again, do you think I made it?

Hit the link for all the techie details behind the shot and some of the issues I had to overcome to make it happen. (Click here to see more…)
Wow what a day. Today I got set an assignment by Joe McNally to photograph the lovely Alessia – an up and coming musician. The goal was to get two photographs suitable for a magazine (one landscape and one portrait as a cover) in order to show Alessia as a very quirky but likeable person (think Biorke). How on earth do you do that? And more to the point, how on earth do you shoot and edit those in under 3 hours? Keep on reading to find out how and how this turned out to be one of my most expensive photos to date…

Story and more photos after the jump…

So here’s a conundrum, what do you put in a wedding photoblog post when the couple asks that you refrain from adding any identifiable photos of them? Well I guess we’re about to find out! Saturday was an absolutely perfect day for a wedding. The sun shone down on Nick and Li as they got married in the Cambridge Registry office, then moved on by punt to King’s College for a fab reception. For those of you not from Cambridge, King’s is an absolutely beautiful college. So much history and so many different photo locations. I was falling over myself with great places for shots! So, if you’re getting married at King’s and wouldn’t mind me putting identifiable photos up then please hit me up in the comments or use the contact page to get in touch. I’d really love to shoot another King’s wedding.
