CLH: Cambridge Lindy Exchange 2009

So last weekend Cambridge got taken over by over 100 people from around the world. Yep it was time for 2009′s Cambridge Lindy Exchange. Had a great time, lots of cake, fun and friendly people. As usual for me I couldn’t put the camera down and as such spent the weekend photographing in between songs (well during a lot of them as well). Had lots of time to play with lighting and trying to focus with fast moving people in dark environments. I have to confess photographing Lindy has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences over the years. Getting it right is tough! But boy does it make you learn fast and most of it transfers nicely to other photography areas.

Anyway I’ll be putting a lot more photos up soon but here’s a few to keep you going…

GeekFest: LLX Lighting

So yes I promised I’d do a post going into a bit more detail about how to light the 200 odd people of the London Lindy Exchange. Dancing fast. In a large (70x40ft) hall. With only three speedlights…

If you’re not a camera nerd I suggest you leave this post alone. Otherwise find out after the jump…

Dance: London Lindy Exchange 2009

Filed under Uncategorized Tags: , — • Written by Alex @ 9:22 pm on .

So, this past weekend was the London Lindy Exchange. It’s a really cool event where Swing dancers from around the world get together to share a drink, dance and their sofa with any other dancer in need of a place to crash. It’s full of live bands, awesome DJs, a fab hall (Old Finsbury Town Hall) and (well at least when the Cambridge guys are around), lots and lots of CAKE! Anyway, muggins here was invited along as ‘official’ photographer (hell I’d have gone along anyway just to dance (well, and eat cake) and would I  have ever been able to forgive myself if I left my camera at home for such a great event??)

Photos are up in the client section of CrookedRoad with the password llx09. Feel free to check out the entire set. I’ll get the photo CDs, for those who bought them, off in the post later this week along with a geeky “how I lit it” blog entry.

Hopping Mad – CrazyBooth

So, Saturday saw this years Cambridge Lindy Hoppers, Hopathon. It’s a 12 hour sponsored dance held each year in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, and, it’s always a hoot. Personally I’ve never seen quite so many home baked goodies at once either (maybe with the exception of a particular school fate when I was 10…). Anyway, to do my bit I wheeled out the “Crazy Booth”, (a mini photo studio with lots of crazy costumes) and sold photos all day for CF. As you might be able to tell from the photos, it was possibly a *little* bit fun icon wink

Performance – Beauty

Filed under Uncategorized Tags: , , , , , , — • Written by Alex @ 2:54 pm on January 20, 2009.

So Beauty is a contemporary dance show put on by the Cambridge University Contemporary Dance Workshop between the 20th-24th of January at the ADC theatre. I’m not usually a fan of contemporary dance, however I’ve been to previous years’ shows (Perspectives and Elemental) and both were a thoroughly good use of an evening. This year is no exception with a good blend of contemporary mixed with Lindy, Rock and Roll various other styles. If you have a spare evening I highly recommend checking it out.
