Band: Out of the Blue

It’s been a busy month for me. I was up bright and early last Saturday following the Oxford & Cambridge Club’s ball the previous night. After dragging ourselves out of bed, Holly and I hopped back on the underground before driving over to Oxford to meet Out of the Blue.

I’d been looking forward to this shoot for quite a while. For those of you who don’t know, Out of the Blue are an amazing a cappella group made up entirely of Oxford students and specialising in some rather unusual renditions. If you haven’t heard them, stop reading this right now and go check them out or youtube their Britain’s Got Talent semi-final performance.

Unfortunately as is often the way on this sort of thing, we ended up getting a little pushed for time and losing one of our locations. Nevertheless we made the most of what we had and started in Exeter College chapel before heading down to Holly’s old college, Oriel, for this one on the steps.

I had a great time and it was really awesome to hear the guys put on some impromptu little jam sessions while I set up all the lights. Beats my normal model shoots!

More soon,
Alex

Edit: I also shot some pretty cool individual shots…

Just got back from the <a href="http://www.modelshealth.com/"ModelsHealth Fittest Body 2010 photoshoot. Great to be back shooting the competition winners again this year and had a blast working with Carissa all the way from Colorado Springs. I got the hard job of shooting the girls (well girl, unfortunately MC Bario got ill and didn’t make the shoot) with Justin Tayler and Luis Rafael taking the guys. Justin and Luis have very different styles to me so it was really fun to see how they worked. Can’t wait to see the results guys!

Anyway just thought I’d put one of mine out there for everybody to see. Be sure to check out the ModelsHealth site in the coming weeks where a lot more will be going up!

More adventures soon,
Alex :D

Techie: Story behind the photo – Part II – Dogs!

Having not learned my lesson with the horses I decided to up my game and this time try a photograph including not one but two dogs. The vision for this one was a very highly stylised almost Chanel like photo of Carys with her two dogs. I’ve put the photo up on the blog before but here it is again along with a couple of others we snagged to jog your memory.

Well if you want to know some of the secret sauce which went into this photo hit the read more link…

Techie: Story behind the photo – Part I – Horses

Never work with children or animals. At what point did I forget that golden rule?? Well anyway I know I promised to do a little techie post on some of my more recent photos so here goes nothing.

So let’s start with the horse shot. The back story to this is that it was inspired by a mixture of Lord of the Rings and Drew Gardner. What I wanted to do was put Carys in the middle of a sunny forest with beams of light shining through the trees and her riding through them. Here’s the shot again, do you think I made it?

Hit the link for all the techie details behind the shot and some of the issues I had to overcome to make it happen. (Click here to see more…)

Dubai: Gulf Photo Plus – Part II – Quadra go Boom.

Wow what a day. Today I got set an assignment by Joe McNally to photograph the lovely Alessia – an up and coming musician. The goal was to get two photographs suitable for a magazine (one landscape and one portrait as a cover) in order to show Alessia as a very quirky but likeable person (think Biorke). How on earth do you do that? And more to the point, how on earth do you shoot and edit those in under 3 hours? Keep on reading to find out how and how this turned out to be one of my most expensive photos to date…

Story and more photos after the jump…

Dubai: Gulf Photo Plus – Part1

Well it’s been one hell of a week here in Dubai. Last Monday I took the (somewhat suicidal) decision to fly half way around the world and spend a week hanging out and shooting with some of the best modern photographers in the world. Coming up to the end of it, all I can say is “wow”.

I started the week by being the first unwitting subject of a certain Mr Joe McNally. For those of you that don’t know, Joe has been a pro for about 40 years, was the last Life staff photographer and has worked for more publications than I care to shake a very long stick at (think National Geographic, Sports Illustrated etc etc). Crazy being on the other side of his lens! Joe’s a really awesome guy: at 58 he still spends 95% of his life tearing around the world shooting. After he got done shooting me, I really enjoyed having him rip into my photos and tell me just how badly I’d got it all wrong (I guess whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!). As it turns out, most of the time I seem to be pretty good at ripping my images apart even before Joe starts ;)

After a few days of that I decided to head down to the Burj Arab for some sunset photos. I caught the one below just as the sun was hitting the horizon.

Another quickie post from me I’m afraid. Tomorrow’s a fly day as I’m off to Dubai for some more photo fun (all being well and BA choosing not to strike…). This is a shot from last Sunday which really leapt out at me: I love the colours and saturation. It was awesome fun and we were so lucky with the weather – getting those nice fluffy clouds. I’m going to try and write up some techie posts on the plane to explain all the lighting and shenanigans going on to create this and the balloon shot but do let me know if there is anything in particular you want to know.

More adventures coming to a screen near you very soon!

Commercial: A long weekend

So I spent this weekend out with one of my commercial customers on a big shoot. Can’t say that much about it yet or post many images but I did get permission to put this one up quickly. Rest assured more from this shoot (both trials and triumphs) will be coming in the following weeks, oh and sorry to all those whose emails I’ve been a touch slow answering!

More adventures soon,
Alex :D
