Fire Gathering

So don’t try this at home. Well at least not without supervision of somebody who knows what they’re doing, fire’s dangerous and if you’re not careful there’s a good chance you’ll singe all your hair off. Or worse. Trust me, burnt hair isn’t a good look.

Anyway with that out of the way I spent the bank holiday weekend at Fire Gathering. Awesome event just the right size and with loads going on, from live music to massage, circus skill and obviously fire. I have to admit to being a touch proud when Sam and I started the fire on the Saturday night. With so many talented spinners, jugglers and dancers I think everybody was scared to be the first to light up. Us being us, Sam and I decided to break out the paraffin anyway and get the spectacle under way. Before I could say “ouch that’s hot” I was surrounded by a mass of fire and decided to bow to the super talented masters. Probably a good thing – I like my hair…

Cambridge: Buskers Festival

Filed under Uncategorized • Written by Alex @ 10:50 pm on May 17, 2009.

So what do you do when Cambridge City Council emails you and asks if you’d photograph the coming Buskers’ Festival? Well my first reaction was to ask what on earth a buskers’ festival is?!? Turns out that once a year (and once a year only) the City Council welcomes buskers to the street to ply their trade, entertain the locals (well and tourists) and earn themselves some dough.
What a great idea! This year the festival contained great diverse acts from Opera Singers through to fire jugglers and onto comic magicians with a few human statues and break dancers thrown in. Great fun and I highly recommend it to anybody next year.

Wedding: Selwyn College, Cambridge – Emily and Chris

So, another weekend, another wedding. This time it was the turn of the lovely Emily and Chris. What a great couple they make, the English Rose and the Aussie… well Aussie. It’s really nice to see just how in love Emily and Chris are, we even had two kisses at the altar, how controversial is that?!?

Anyway, onto the photos: Selwyn is a really gorgeous Cambridge college, wish we had a little more time in order to get more fun portraits but, as is the way with weddings, we were on a tight schedule (Emily and Chris had to get to a different location for the reception). Still, with their help I think we nailed it.

This one was a candid just after the ceremony. Really couldn’t ask for a more laid back, in love couple.

I spotted this location on the way in, I just love the symmetry of the Master’s Lodge. Emily and Chris really set the image off. Lighting here is from an SB900 flash just to the left of camera.

Fashion: Birthday Shoot

So what do you get a photographer as a birthday present? Well Holly chose to get me a photoshoot, costumes were from a massive selection laid on by Country Drama Wardrobe location was of my choice and the models were all sorted. Couldn’t ask for a better present.

Since this was a present the shoot was a touch more free form than normal with us all having loads of fun and basically just shooting anything that sprung to mind. I chose the derelict house from a previous post as the location. Really was awesome fun, thanks to everybody for coming along and special thanks to Holly for organising it. That girl truly can make anything happen!

First off, here’s one of the aforementioned girl in a gorgeous 1920′s dress…

Wedding: Betsy and Freddie, Great Sampford.

So the bank holiday was another mammoth photo weekend for me. It all kicked off this time on the Saturday with the wedding of Betsy and Freddie in Great Sampford, Saffron Waldon. This was one of the few weddings that I’ve shot where I didn’t stay for the whole day. The main reason was that Betsy and Freddie were only after a small amount of coverage, and since it was my birthday and arranged at the last moment I caved. I had a great time, got some fab candids and even made it back in time for a birthday dinner.

As you might be able to tell I went with a slightly more grungy look with these, it seemed to really gel with the couple. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments and as always more photographs after the jump!
