Location, Location, Location

So some of you might know I’m always on the scout for a new location. My current search entails finding somewhere close in proximity to Cambridge, interesting looking and able to supply multiple different backdrops for upto 10 photographers and models. The reason? Well I’m planning a big photoshoot for later in the year where photographers, models and makeup artists of all standards can come together. The hope is everybody will have a great day, get some awesome portfolio shots and hopefully learn something from everybody else there. I might even throw in a little lighting seminar myself and try to convince some of the other more experienced photographers to teach something.

Anyway, I digress. Tonight I think I might have found the perfect location. It’s a derelict airbase which has lain empty for the past 15 years. It’s a massive complex with so many different locations, it’s almost unbelievable. Now the only challenge left is to get permission to take a group that big and, well, organize the group!
Here’s a sneak peek at the base…

Wedding: New CD boxes are here!

So it turns out the company I used to use for CD folios was a victim of the “credit crunch”. Doh! Anyway I took it as a great opportunity to re-design all of the packaging for my couples who order photo DVDs. Well I’m finally done and here’s the result:

The heart of the design is a hand-made CD folio made from recycled linen pressed into paper. This is held in by a blue velvet ribbon, covered in tissue paper and placed in a brown cardboard box lined with blue felted paper. It’s topped off by a note I write to each couple and a 5×7 print.

Anyway, Nick and Emily, Matt and Cat, Kate and Paul, yours are all in the mail soon. I’d be really interested to know what you think about them so feel free to hit me up  in the comments!

Wedding: Emily and Nick – Twyford, Nr Winchester

Edit: Emily and Nick’s wedding website now online! Check it out here.

So the British weather decided to do its thing on Saturday. Emily and Nick had arranged to get married in the most beautiful village with picturesque countryside all around. Twyford/Shawford are absolutely gorgeous and I was really looking forward to some fab outdoor photos. That was until Saturday arrived and it started to rain… and rain… and rain.
Oh well, despite the rain I had a really great day. The church was really fab and made for some great ceremony shots with lots of love between the new Mr and Mrs Belcher. The reception was a marquee in Emily’s parents’ beautiful garden which proved to be perfect, we all sheltered from the rain and danced the night away to Swing Jazz.

Fashion: Liz – Derelict House

So Saturday gave me the chance to photograph the gorgeous Liz, an aspiring model who needed some shots for her portfolio. Obviously I was happy to oblige and we decided to hit the haunted house you might have seen in a couple of other posts. It’s really an amazing location and every time I go there I come back wanting more! Literally around every corner there’s three more shooting locations.
Time was tight on Saturday and there was only me to carry gear so I went with a simple two light setup and we only managed a few locations at the house. Liz made it easy though, I mean how can you go wrong photographing somebody like her! Monkey press buttons and get nice shot….

Strobist info: 1 SB900 high camera right into a Extra Small Chimera Softbox with a 60° grid on the front to prevent spill. Back light is from a 540Ez camera left zoomed and fired at Liz.

London: Fourth Plinth – One & Other

Filed under Uncategorized Tags: , — • Written by Alex @ 12:13 am on .

So it’s finally started. The fourth plinth project called “One & Other” today quite literally got off the ground with members of the public taking to the air for their one hour slot. For those of you who don’t know Holly is working like an eager beaver on the project so I thought I’d pop along and see what it’s all about.

Had a fab time, it’s the most interactive piece of art I’ve seen. Hey I even got thrown a chocolate bar from a plinthian 6 metres up. If you’re interested you can sign up to take up your place on the plinth at the one and other website here and you can read Holly’s blog here. If you’re passing through London anytime soon, I suggest you swing by Trafalgar square and support whoever’s currently up.

Chocolate rains down all around…

Techie: Importing D90, D300s and D3s dmovie video into Premiere Pro

Edit: Apparently this also works on the D300s and the D3s! Feel free to share your experiences in the comments.
Edit2 -The non-techie way… OK this subject appears to get an awful lot of attention and some people are having problems following all the steps/not liking using the terminal. As such I’ve decided to be nice to you all and package up an automator script which does all the heavy lifting for you. No need to use the Terminal with this method. Check out the method section for details.

So this is the first of a couple of techie posts to my blog. I know, I know you all come here for the pictures of Orcs but hey this is my way of helping other professional photographers save a bit of time and hair pulling.

The D90 is a Nikon camera used by Holly and myself which allows the recording of HD video. What makes it special is the fact that it has a large sensor and can use any nikon lens, this in turn means you can get truly cinema like depth of feel. If you don’t have a D90 and Premier, I suggest you bail out now, else.. (Click here to see more…)
